Traditional Thai art and craft ranges from paintings and musical instruments to beautiful silk, silver wear, pottery, puppets, Khon masks, model warships, bronze wear, soap carving, sculptures, wood and stone carvings, ceramics and much more.

Thailand painting mostly receives influence from Buddhist religion. Hence, there are many Buddha imaginations mixed and blended within the art collections.

Since 1949, the National Exhibition of Art, the first and most significant art competition in Thailand, has been at the forefront of Thailand’s art scene. The competition has played a significant role in the development of Thai modern art, which can be reflected in works selected and nominated for competition each year.

The development is multifaceted and fascinating, due largely to the teaching of Silpa Bhirasri, who combined Western art knowledge with Thainess. The result is Thai modern art which reflects the confluence of the two cultural hemispheres.

In the early days of the National Exhibition of Art, art works were largely influenced by its motherland. However, Western art had a massive impact on many early students of Silpa Bhirasi. Most works were impressionism paintings depicting natural landscapes, a form which was popular among Silpa Bhirasri’s students, who practiced art both inside and outside the art institution.

Also, art in this period was not much engaged in politics. In this same period, artists also introduced new knowledge and techniques from Western art to the Thai society, which aided the rapid development of Thai modern art.

Thai modern art is different from that of the Western counterpart. It has been a result of the direct adoption of western art. The development of teaching techniques in line with Western art have been introduced and adopted by craftsmen and artists.

In Thailand, art cannot be compared with that as practiced in the West.  The definition of Thai modern art is different from that of the Western counterpart.

Chahn Sutarapong graduated from Chung Ling high school in Penang Malaysia, while studying art under two Malaysian artists; one of whom is Chua Thien Teng, a well-known batik painter and one of Malaysia’s foremost contemporary art gurus. He also took correspondence courses offered by the Washington School of Art and the British Institute of Careers. Chahn began his career as an artist by working with advertising agencies as visualiser/illustrator prior to joining the Bangkok Post’s creative department in 1974.
After over twenty years of service, he left the Post in 1995 to pursue his painting fulltime. He also used to teach art at a Japanese Painting Class at the Japanese Association for quite some years. Occasionally, Chahn works on portrait and nude, but most of the time is reserved for his more laborious landscape painting. He paints quickly, on the spot, which gives his landscapes a freshness and vibrancy, catching the mood of the moment. He paints “anything which impresses him” but it is light and shade that you see when you gaze at his timeless scenes of moored barges and Chao Praya river life.
